Ramadan

Month of the Musulman lunar calendar, a period of daily fasting for the faithful, from sunrise to sunset. A time of spiritual purification, it is also generally a time of celebration and the occasion each evening to meet with family and friends to break the fast together.

National holidays

  • 1 January: New Year's Day
  • 11 January: Independence Manifesto
  • 1 May: Labour Day
  • 30 July: Feast of the Throne This is the most important civil holiday in Morocco.
  • 14 August: Allegiance of Oued Eddahab
  • 20 August: Anniversary of the King’s and People’s Revolution
  • 21 August: Young People’s Day
  • 6 November: Anniversary of the Green March
  • 18 November: Independence Day


Festivals

  • The folklore festival takes place over a period of 15 days in June or July, in the ruins of the Badi Palace in Marrakech.
  • In October the Marrakech International Film Festival takes place.

Musulman holidays*

  • Start of Ramadan (ninth month of the Musulman calendar), towards 22 August 2009
  • Aid El-Fitr (or Aid El-Seghir) marks the end of the month of Ramadan, towards 21 September 2009.
  • Aid El-Kebir (or Aid El-Adha) commemorates Abraham's sacrifice, towards 28 November 2009.
  • Mawlid celebrates the birth of the Prophet, on 09 March 2008.
